What a missed call can cost a trade business

A missed enquiry can mean more than one lost job. Understand where calls go unanswered and decide what is worth improving in your business.

Why calls go unanswered

Working on a roof, under a sink or with noisy equipment makes answering a phone difficult. Travelling between jobs, evenings and two callers arriving at once create more gaps. The problem is often the way the work is organised, rather than a lack of care for customers.

A caller may try another business before you are free to respond. That does not make every missed call lost revenue: some are repeat calls, sales calls or enquiries you could not have accepted. Start by separating those from genuine new opportunities.

An example, not a revenue forecast

Suppose five missed calls a week are genuine potential jobs. Across 48 working weeks that is 240 enquiries. If one in four would have become a job, at an average invoice value of €350, the illustration comes to €21,000 in potential annual revenue.

Those are assumptions, not measured rylivo results or a promise of extra income. Revenue is also not profit. Use your own enquiry rate, conversion rate, capacity and margins before deciding what an answering service is worth.

Look beyond the first job

An enquiry can lead to repeat business or a recommendation. A missed call may also waste part of the advertising spend that generated it. Neither effect is guaranteed, but both are reasons to track where enquiries come from and whether you reach the caller again.

Measure your own gap

  • Review unanswered calls during a representative working week.
  • Separate unique customer enquiries from repeat calls and sales calls.
  • Record how often callbacks connect and become accepted jobs.
  • Compare the cost of improving coverage with the likely contribution from work you can actually take on.

Choose a workable response

Scheduled callbacks, an office team member, an answering service and voicemail can each fit different businesses. An AI assistant is another option: it can capture the request and callback details when the team cannot answer.

rylivo keeps the decision about the job with you. The assistant records approved information and enquiries; you decide whether to quote, attend or arrange an appointment.
